Banking and compliance paperwork prepared for a meeting for Can a Non-Resident Open a UAE Bank Account? The Honest Answer.

The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that it depends on what type of account you need, which bank you approach, and how well-prepared your documentation is.

This article covers the full picture of non-resident banking in the UAE for African entrepreneurs and investors.

    What Non-Residents Can Actually Get

Non-UAE residents can open: personal savings accounts (not current accounts), multi-currency accounts at banks with international divisions, and corporate accounts for UAE-registered companies where the director is not yet a UAE resident.

The key limitation: non-residents cannot get a UAE chequebook, and some banking features (credit cards, loans) require residency. For most African entrepreneurs, these limitations are not material the banking they need is for receiving and sending international payments, which works fully for non-residents.

    The One Practical Requirement

You will need to visit a UAE bank branch in person at least once for final identity verification and account signing. This is a UAE Central Bank requirement, not a DBC requirement. We coordinate your appointment and prepare all documentation so your visit takes half a day, not multiple trips.

    Which Banks Work for Non-Residents

Mashreq Bank is our primary recommendation for non-resident accounts. Mashreq has an explicit non-resident banking programme, clear documentation requirements, and a responsive compliance team that DBC has an established relationship with. We have opened accounts for clients from Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, and across Africa as non-residents.

    What You Need to Prepare

    • Valid passport, 6+ months remaining
    • Proof of address in your home country (within 3 months)
    • 3 to 6 months of home country bank statements
    • Source of funds documentation (invoices, contracts, payslips, or investment statements)
    • Brief explanation of why you need UAE banking and what you will use it for

DBC's non-resident bank account service is USD 650 for personal savings and USD 950 for corporate accounts. WhatsApp us at +971 52 277 4830 to discuss your situation.
